The three ideals addressed in the strategic plan are: "excellence in education, a sense of community, and a commitment to service" (please click here to see Marist's Strategic Plan). In support of the mission statement and the three ideals, the Marist College defined eight strategic goals and 93 initiatives to achieve those strategic goals.
For the final class project, we selected one goal and three initiatives, in support of that goal, and are working to develop a strategic plan, tactics, and other materials to promote them. Our team selected goal number one: “Enhance the quality and distinctiveness of the Marist educational experience for all students - traditional age undergraduates, graduate students, and adult learners" (Marist, 2010). The initiatives we selected are:
- 21. Systematically monitor trends in the graduate student market and survey the student population to determine what programs, delivery formats, services, and price points should be enhanced, developed, or modified;
- 22. Strengthen student support services for graduate students and make them more accessible, including online and on-campus services;
- 26. Develop community-based learning experiences for graduate students including research, internships, and service learning opportunities.

This is an effective purpose statement; however, you have not adapted the writing of this statement to the Web. Even for a manuscript this would be a very long paragraph. When writing for the Web, you must enhance the readability of text that readers will view on a computer screen or mobile device by organizing units of writing (sentences and paragraphs, bullets, etc.) in small, clearly organized, "chunks" of information.
ReplyDeleteBreak this statement into smaller paragraphs and even bullets (e.g., your numbered points). When starting a new idea, start a new paragraph. Also use indents or even headings and subheadings to make transitions to new paragraphs stand out.
Also, when citing direct quotes, insert a p. or para. #). And avoid passive voice. Use active voice (e.g., We selected the following initiatives.).
Mark, thank you for your comments. I tried to address them in the revised version. Best, Helen.
