Online Student Demographics

So who are the online students and why are they pursuing their academic carriers online? According to OnlineUniversities.com, there are 7.8 million online graduate students with the average age of 34. Their gender make-up is 53% female and 47% male of which, 46.6% white, 24.8% black, 29.8% Hispanic, 3.2% Asian, and 4.6% others. The growth rate for online learning at 21% has significantly outpaced the growth of traditional education at 1.8%, demonstrating a significant change in the education environment. This article also states that the major reasons for selecting an online program are convenience, flexibility, work/family balance, program requirements, cost, availability of financial assistance, credit transfer, and future carrier opportunities. Why did you select the online program over on campus program?

  1. I selected Marist online program because it enables me to balance work, family and school, reputation, quality of education and cost.

  2. In my undergrad years I realized that I learn and do better online. There was an amazing improvement in my grades when I am self-motivated. Along with that, it is more convenient.
